Earthquake in Metro Manila

Did you feel the earthquake?

Me and my teammates (except for 1 hehehe) but the rest of the people in our department didn't seem to feel it. My boyfriend all the way at his work felt it, too.

Here are the specifics from the United States Geological Survey website:

Everybody take care! Personally I'm terrified of earthquakes. I just think of being on a flyover in the middle of a strong earthquake with my car hanging over the road that just split wide open. Waaaaaah!

Just take care everyone. There's so many earthquakes happening so it doesn't hurt to be prepared:

Here are 10 tips for when an earthquake happens:

1. Protect yourself first. Be careful and wait until the earthquake is over.

2.Keep calm. Check all fire sources. Put out fire quickly.

  • If you were using any sources of fire or heat, turn them off when the shaking calms down.
  • If a fire starts, put it out quickly and calmly.

3. Panic can hurt you.

Be careful of fallen furniture and broken glass.

4. Make sure you have a way out: open doors and windows.

Secure an exit for escape when the shaking stops.

5. Don't rush out in a panic. Watch out for falling objects.

Watch out for falling objects such as roof tiles, broken glass, and signs.

6. Keep away from gateposts and walls.

If you feel an earthquake outside, stay away from concrete walls and other objects which may fall over.

7. Get the right information. Take the right action.

Get accurate information from radio, television, fire stations, local authorities, etc.

8. Make sure your family and neighbors are safe.

After you confirm your family’s safety, check if your neighbors are all right.

9. Work together on rescue and first aid.

Work with your neighbors to free victims from under debris or fallen furniture and to give first aid.

10. Make sure electricity and gas are off before evacuation.

Turn off circuit breakers and the gas at the main before you evacuate.

Everyone be safe!

Penshoppe's ClubPen Model Victor Basa stars with Alessandra de Rossi in Indie Film

Penshoppe's very own Club Pen member (Penshoppe endorser), Victor Basa is starring opposite Alessandra de Rossi in the indie film, "Romeo at Juliet."
Most recently, the film is in a mix of controversy as its trailer was rated X because of "back exposure."

I haven't seen the trailer but according to de Rossi, the back exposure is their only reason for providing such a rating to its trailer. Again, she clarifies that the X-Rating is just for their trailer and not the movie, itself.  She even jokingly says that she would never knowingly commit to a project that was X-Rated as she even shies away from even just kissing scenes.
Romeo at Juliet is about two lovers from two problematic families. The two find solace in their love and yet eventually, their families get in the way of their relationship.
Romeo at Juliet will soon be showing in theaters.

Managing Your Money Like the Ultra Rich

I just learned something very interesting today and honestly, quite unheard of in my own mindset of being very stingy and careful with my money. In my own defense, I'm a strong believer in delayed gratification so I would tend to really scrimp on expenses and hold out on purchasing anything major (clothes, shoes, etc.) for myself until such time I feel that I have "earned" it or when I've already reached a particular financial goal. As such, now I am holding out all expenses in lieu of funneling money to my fledgling business... and rightly so because my current job pays me pocket change and business expenses every month in so far (my receivables have not yet come in) are my salary several times over. It's a big "ouch!" if you must know.
So, when I read the third chapter for Jomar Hilario's e-book, my first reaction was "Hmmm??"
Before I continue with my own reaction, I'll let you judge for yourself. Jomar Hilario quoted T. Harv Eker's book, Secrets of the Millionaire Mind wherein he stated the different categories to which we must plan our spending and allocate our budgets BEFORE we actually spend our hard earned salaries.
1.      Financial Freedom Account - To be spent only on Passive Income creating things.
2.      Long Term Savings - If you need to buy an expensive thing
3.      Education - For financial education seminars, books, trips to seminars, workshops and coaching. This will teach you where to put your money for item #1 above.
4.      Giving  - If you want to give to church or charity
5.      Expenses - Rent, Food, Fares, Donations to Family
6.      Play  - It's a surprise, I'll discuss this later.

All the other categories are pretty self explanatory especially for people who've read any personal finance book or attended any seminar. What came as a surprise to me was item #6. Play.
According to Hilario, "Play" pertains to 10% of your income that you're REQUIRED to spend on "the finer things in life," as he puts it, may it be that Louis Vuitton bag, Tag Heuer watch, P16,000 Limited Edition Adidas shoes or the trip to Macau that you've been wanting to take for so long.
I would tend to save that amount for the big purchase that I'm eyeing but Jomar says, that amount MUST BE GONE at the end of each month. I'm still struggling to meld this with my own money practices but Hilario makes a pretty good point when he says that this must be done in order to "heal" our financial limiting beliefs like "I can't afford it," "I don't have enough money," "I don't deserve expensive things like that."
I'll let this sit and register in my mind first while I wait for the next installment of Jomar Hilario's book to arrive in my inbox. The whole concept intrigues me very much and I think I should pick up T. Harv Eker's book as well while I'm waiting.

**If you want to also receive Jomar's ebook just simply sign up on his website: http://www.jomarhilario.com

Is Your Passport Still Green?

Is your passport still green?

If it is then you need to head on to DFA to have your passport changed to the new machine-readable kind. Machine readable passports are valid until the expiry indicated on the passport whereas the green/manually scripted passports are only valid until April 10, 2010! That's less than a month from now!

Go to http://www.passport.com.ph (Don't worry it's the DFA website for passport applications and renewals.) to schedule your appointment and know more about the process and document requirements.

Setting an appointment is easy. Just go to http://www.passport.com.ph go to the "Set an Appointment" link.

Make sure you have the following information ready especially if you're setting an appointment for other people as well.

  1. Complete name
  2. Birth Date
  3. Birth Place
  4. Old passport number (for renewal)
  5. Father's Name
  6. Mother's Maiden Name
  7. Complete Address
  8. Telephone Number
  9. Mobile Number
After putting in your information, it's now time to set your appointment. Appointments are set in 30 minute time increments. Just pick the time. Take note of your appointment reference number and print out your application form.

Be there 30 minutes before your schedule! According to the website, they won't entertain both early and late comers.

I've already set my schedule and I blocked off an entire day for it. You never know with these government things. They mostly take forever unless you know the right people (if you know what I mean ;) ).

Is your passport already the new one?

Let us know how it went.

How to be a Billionaire

The story and article below from Bo Sanchez  really explains the importance of saving and an awareness of personal finance for a person's future.
Very often I see and hear people talk about how barely anything is left of their salary every month, how "matipid" they supposedly are and yet they are hardly able to save anything because they spend for their nearest whim may it be toys, shoes, gadgets, etc. The concept of delayed gratification is so lost most of the time. Although I am all for treating yourself from time to time for all your hard work, I am also a very strong advocate for saving up and more importantly, seeing the bigger picture of "why" you're saving money. I am very goal-oriented and everything I do needs to have a reason and purpose. I do purchase some stuff from time to time on a whim (retail therapy :p) but I do make it a point to stay on track with my goals and avoid unnecessary spending as much as possible.
One of the most prevalent poor mindset when it comes to money came from one of my previous bosses. I'm sure that you've heard this at least once from someone you may even know very well (i.e. you): I had just gotten a raise and my boss said, "Anong bibilhin mo sa raise mo?" (What are you going to buy with your raise?) and to that I said, "Ah wala. Ise-save ko yung sweldo ko." What he told me has stuck with me since then as a lesson as to how NOT to deal with excess money. He said... "Ha? Sinasabi mo lang yan. Ganyan naman e. It's natural. Kapag tumataas ang suweldo tumataas din ang gastos." I'm not sure if I was able to hold my eyebrow from raising at an incredible angle but I thought to myself that it wasn't necessarily so and more importantly, it shouldn't be so. You're dooming yourself to living the same lifestyle forever instead of actually moving up.
It's something to think about. Personally, I replay that line in my head whenever I feel like spending. It allows me to have a "reality check" and puts me back on track. I just think about my 30-something boss who was already at a very high paying position in our company and still did not yet seem to have the right monetary mindset. I hope that in the years since we last saw each other that he'd straightened up his financial mindset most especially since he now probably has a family.
Anyhow, please do take the time to read Bo Sanchez' article below. It'll really change how you see things and it'll not only show you the importance of saving and investing early but he will also tell you where to put it. This is the concept that is so difficult to explain (believe me I've tried to explain it time and again) most especially to people who are already a few years into working and still have not even begun to think of their future and have not yet begun to save a single cent.
=============================================================
One day, a man got lost walking in the desert.
The next day, he was still lost.
After two days under the scorching sun, he was very thirsty.
All of a sudden, he saw a little wooden shed.
He ran to it, thinking of only one thing—Water!
When he arrived there, he saw an old, rusty water pump sticking from the ground. He gripped the handle and began pumping like a mad man.
But nothing came out.
Disappointed, he stepped back how to make it work.
Looking around, he saw a jug covered with dust.
When he grabbed it, he saw a piece of paper stuck on it. The message read, “Open this jug and you’ll find water. Don’t drink it. Pour it instead on the pump. And you’ll have all the water you want.”
       He popped the cork.
True enough, the jug was filled with water. Lovely, thirst-quenching, water.
Now imagine you’re that thirsty man.
For two whole days, you haven’t drunk water. Your mouth is so dry, your tongue is sticking to the roof of your mouth. You’re literally dying of thirst. And you’re now holding a jug full of water. But the message says that you should throw it away!
For a moment, your heart is torn.
What if the message was a joke? A cruel prank? What if you poured the water on that rusty pump and nothing happened?
But the man in our story chose to take the risk.
He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and poured the water.
He held the handle and pumped like crazy.
A few seconds later, torrents of water gushed out. Indeed, he had more water than he could ever need!
He drank to his heart content. He also found water containers to bring with him in his journey and filled them up to the brim.
But before leaving the place, he filled the jug with water.
And underneath the sign attached to it, he scribbled, “I tried it. Believe me, it works.”
You Have A Choice:
Drink Now Or Drink Forever
This is a great picture of why people are poor.
The money that you hold now, no matter how small, is like that jug of water. And you always have a choice: You can drink now or you can drink forever. You can have money now or have money forever.
How? By investing.
A lot of people don’t invest.
They spend whatever they have.
I’ve met people who earn P10T a month or 50T a month or P500T a month—and they spend everything.  (Yes, I’ve met a lot of high-income poor people!) That’s why their money pump remains dry. And they’ll remain poor forever. It really doesn’t matter how much people earn. What matters is how much they invest.
Investment is a crazy decision.
It’s as crazy as pouring that last jug of water into the pump.
Friend, you have money now.
It may be small but you have it.
And you’re standing in front of a money pump.
       Actually, three money pumps:
·        Business: Traditional, Franchise, Networking, etc.
·        Property: Rental Property, Buy and Sell, etc.
·        Paper: Bonds, Mutual Funds, Stock Market, etc.
But today, I’d like to focus on the “Paper” money pump.
Not everyone can start a business right away.
Not everyone can buy a property right away.
But almost everyone can invest in Paper Assets.
Friend, you have a choice.
Will you simply consume your little money?
Or will you pour it into the money pump—so that it produces more money for you?
I call this sowing in time of famine.
Don’t Wait For Better Times
Before You Invest
In the Bible, Isaac sowed in time of famine.
Crazy, right?
Shouldn’t you keep whatever seeds you have to eat?
But because he did that, the Bible says, that year he harvested a hundred times as much as he had sown, because the Lord blessed him. He continued to prosper and became a very rich man.
Wow.
If you want to be rich, you need to sow in time of famine too.
When you have very little money, that’s the time to invest.
Here’s a promise: The seeds that you sow in time of famine will give you your greatest harvest too.
       Do you want to prosper?
Here’s a Bible passage that will tell you how.
Invest When Your Money Is Small
Proverbs 21:20 says, The wise man saves for the future but the foolish man spends whatever he gets.
Are you wise?
Let me tell you the story of Jack and Jill.
Jack and Jill went up the hill to get a pail of water.
Jack fell down and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling after. And the people who saw the horrific accident, they sang and clapped their hands, “Lalalalalala…” (Our nursery rhymes are very strange.)
If all this time, you’ve always been wondering what happened to Jack and Jill after their fall, now you’ll now.
Jack had brain surgery and he recovered.
But he had no health insurance—and his high medical expenses made Jack’s family very poor. This experience changed his life. The emotional pain created an inner resolve in him.
Jack told himself, “When I grow up, I’ll never be poor!”
At age 15, he started a small business.
Everyday, he sold peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to his classmates. Every month, he earned P2500, which he invested in the Stock Market. His uncle advised him to buy the stocks of strong, solid, great companies. For the next 5 years, he was faithful with his investments.
When he reached 20 years old, he volunteered in Anawim, a ministry for the poorest of the poor. He received only a small allowance and didn’t have any savings.  From then on, he couldn’t add to his investments anymore.
Jill Saved At Age 27
Jill had a different life story.
The fall from the hill didn’t affect her too much.
No traumas. Except for a few scratches, she was okay.
She lived a happy-go-lucky life and didn’t save at all.
She worked as a mountain climbing instructor. So her fall from the hill affected her after all, at least subconsciously. She made it her lifelong goal to prevent people from falling.
But she lived like everyone else—spending her salary on “stuff”. Nothing was left at the end of the month.
But when she was 27 years old, Jack called up Jill and invited her again to “Go to a prayer gathering called the Feast.” There, she heard a handsome preacher say that it’s okay to be rich if your heart is in the right place.
That experience changed her life.
At 27 years old, she began to save P2500 a month. And like Jack, she also invested it in the Stock Market—the same strong, solid, great companies that Jack invested in.
She was so faithful to her investments, she didn’t stop until she reached 65 years old.
Happy Retirement
One day, when they were both 65 years old, Jack and Jill had lunch together after the Feast.
While waiting for their dessert, Jack said, “My service in Anawim is so happy and fulfilling.  But I guess at my age, I think I’m ready to retire.”
Jill said, “Me too. At 65, it’s getting a bit difficult to climb mountains.”
That was when Jack touched her hand said, “Jill, remember that day we went up the hill to fetch a pail of water?”
“Yes,” Jill said. “You fell down and broke your crown and I came tumbling after. How can I forget?”
“Do you know why I fell?”
“Why?”
“Instead of looking at where I was going, I kept looking at you.  I had a big crush on you.”
Jill blushed. “You did? Jack, I had a big crush on you too!”
For a few minutes, both of them couldn’t stop laughing.
Jack Pops The Question
That was when Jack looked at Jill and said, “I’m 65 years old.  I don’t have much time left.” He knelt on the floor, held her hand, and asked, “Jill, will you marry me?”
Tears filled her eyes, and she said, “Yes!”
After a few hours of celebrating their old new love, they sat down to discuss their finances.
“How much money did you invest?” Jill asked.
Jack said, “That was a long time ago. For 5 years, from age 15 to 20, I invested a total of P150,000.”
“That small?” Jill looked at him with pity. She said, “For 38 years, from age 27 to 65, I invested a total of P1.17M.”
“Wow,” gushed Jack. “I’m marrying a rich woman.”
“I’ll take care of you,” she squeezed his hand. “But I wonder how much money we have?”
“Let’s take a look.”
Both of them called up their Stock Broker.
Both were totally shocked…

Total Amount Investment:
Jill: P1.17Million
Jack: P150T
Total Retirement Money if it Grew at 20% A Year
Jill: P220M
Jack: P1 Billion
Jill Is A Multi-Millionaire;
Jack Is A Billionaire

If Jack grew his money at 20% a year by investing in great, solid companies through the Stock Market, he’s now a billionaire.
He did that by investing P150T some 45+ years ago.
Jill, because she invested late by 12 years, even if she invested a much bigger amount, P1.17M, has P220M “only”.
Are you 50 or below? You can retire with a few millions.
Are you 40 or below? You can retire with tens of millions.
Are you 30 or below? You can retire with hundreds of millions.
Are you 15 or below?  You can retire with a billion.
How?
Sow in time of famine.
Don’t wait for better times before you invest.
Don’t wait when you have excess money.
Invest now while your money is small.
Because your greatest ally is time.

The Two Ways To Invest In The Stock Market
How do you invest in the Stock Market?
You can do so Directly and Indirectly
You can invest indirectly through a Mutual Fund Company.
There are many great ones around.
On average, you’ll earn 12% or more.
The key is to do this long term. That means for ten years or more, invest every month a small amount of money.
Or you can invest in the Stock Market directly.
If you put small amounts of money every month, buying stocks of great, solid companies (no penny stocks, please!), you can grow at 20% on average every year over the long-term.  Again, only if you do this for ten years or more. Disregard the lows, the crisis, the recessions. Just keep investing when others are panicking. Sow in time of famine!
Some people will tell me 20% is an unrealistic number.
Not true.  It’s really quite simple. In plain English, I teach people how to do it my TrulyRichClub. (More on this later.)
But the key is discipline.
You have to be consistent in investing every month your small amount of money.
How small?
My house helpers invest in the Stock Market already.
That’s how small.
A True Story
My three house helpers now partly own Ayala Land and Manila Water Co. Because they invest in the Stock Market.
       How did they do it?
       They changed their mindset.
They now have a goal: To retire with P5 Million in 20 years.
And I taught them a very simple system.
Each week, I meet my driver and my three helpers for prayer, sharing, and bible study.  In these meetings, I coach them spiritually and financially.
For years, I noticed that nothing is left in their salaries. All their money goes to their families back home.
So I taught them a very simple system that changed their lives. If they can do it, you can do it too.
I discussed this system fully in my Ebook, My Maids Invest In The Stock Market… And Why You Should Too!
If you’re a TrulyRichClub member, you already received this.
Every month, I also send to my TrulyRichClub members a Stocks Update. Through it, I tell them what Stocks to buy, when to buy them, and when to sell them. To join, simply log on at www.TrulyRichClub.com now.
Warning: There are many scams out there that lure ignorant people from their hard-earned money and run away. Please be careful. If you have any questions, I’ve provided email addresses below for you to email.
Are you ready to change your financial life?
Let me end by giving you step-by-step instructions on what to do next…
Instructions:
Step 1: Invest 30% of your Income, Live on 70%
       Why 30%?
First, invest 10% in the Kingdom of God.  This is your investment for eternity.  Tithing is your greatest investment. You tithe to the spiritual family that nourishes your soul.
Second, invest 20% into your Retirement Fund. For most, it’ll be in Mutual Funds or the Stock Market. For a few others, it’ll be in business and properties.
And then live on 70% of your income. Simplify!
Step 2: Invest First Before Spending
That’s why the Bible says to give Him the “first fruits”.
When your receive your salary, set aside your 30% right away. Don’t spend first and then invest what’s left. From experience, nothing will be left.
Step 3: Choose Between Mutual Funds or Stock Market
If you have fifty million or more, and if you’re sixty plus years old, I’ll point you to Bonds and even Banks to keep your money.
But for the rest of us, choose between Mutual Funds or the Stock Market to invest your long-term savings. By long-term, I mean 10 years or more. Each month, you add. But you don’t subtract. Call it your Retirement Fund to brainwash your mind that you won’t touch it.
What’s the difference between Mutual Funds and the Stock Market? In Mutual Funds, you pay a company to manage your funds. Like Philequity or Prudential Optima or ATR Kim Eng and Sunlife Financials or Philam Asset Management… For a small management fee, they take care of your investments. Many insurance companies also combine insurance products with investments, and you can look at those too.
But if you invest in the Stock Market directly, you manage it yourself.  Obviously, you earn more if you learn to invest well.
And yes, you can also do both.
To avoid confusion (and to avoid scams), I’ve written down some resources for you to call or email below.
Mutual Fund Resources
If you like to invest in Mutual Funds, you can email my friends Lyndon Malanog and Fely Santiago. They’ll be happy to assist you. You can email Fely at fely.santiago@yahoo.com or Lyndon at lyndonmalanog@yahoo.com now. They can also help you grow in your financial journey by giving you more opportunities to learn.
Stock Market Resources

More Unknown Candidates from the Unknown Presidentiable's Party - May 2010 Senatorial Candidates

I, personally, don't have much to say about the candidates below except for "Who are you people!?"
If you want to know more about them, I suggest you go to their website: http://www.angkapatiranparty.com/. I haven't visited their individual "credentials" but I do hope that it's more substantial than their presidential candidate.
Want to know who the other May 2010 contenders are? Go to http://www.onthewaytonewyork.blogspot.com
I just posted Noynoy and Mar's Senatorial Slate the other day.

Meet JC de los Reyes 2010 Philippine Presidential Candidate... eerm who?

No disrespect to anyone wants to vote for JC de los Reyes but seriously, what was this guy thinking when he decided to run for president? The only credential he has to speak of is being a two time councilor of Olongapo City and this is also what's basically listed (and it's a very short list) in the website of their very own party called the Ang Kapatiran Party.
Just to prove my point, here is JC's "resume" from their website:
Coun. John Carlos "JC" de los Reyes

PERSONAL INFORMATION:
• Born February 14, 1970
• married to Dunia Valenzuela and gifted with three children – Gabriel (10), Santiago (8), and Barbara (6).
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND:
• Ateneo de Manila – Elementary Education
• De la Salle Zobel – High School
• Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio, U.S.A - B.A. in Theology
• University of the Philippines - Public Administration
• Saint Louis University, Baguio City – Bachelor of Law
WORK EXPERIENCE:
• Philosophy instructor in the University of Asia and the Pacific under the tutelage of Fr. Joseph de Torre
• Proprietor of Legobrick Systems and Designs, a company in the business of manufacturing clay bricks to build genuine brick homes
• Executive Director of Breaking the Yoke of Poverty Foundation
• Two term and currently elected Councilor of Olongapo City
*His long time friendship with Nandy Pacheco, founder of Ang Kapatiran, who he worked with as early as 1996 led him to be the only winner of the party from among 30 national and local bets in the 2007 election. His election was a political comeback after a nine-year hiatus from local politics (JC was first elected councilor in 1995).
*His political career has mostly centered on countering traditional politics by asserting the principle of subsidiarity and the prophetic politics of personal and social transformation.
His passion and mission is to work toward genuine social justice.

I'm not really sure what he's trying to prove. He has no experience. He's basically just starting in his political career... and as much as I applaud him for being so ambitious as to aim high but maybe aiming for the highest position in the country while not going through any other position is too much of a far reach. The fact that he was endorsed by two bishops does not add to his credibility either. They probably like him because he has a B.A. in Theology. Besides that I also read in another blog post comment that he's the nephew of Gordon. Talk about weird.
Would you believe I actually know of one person who's actually going to vote for JC?? I haven't found out his reason yet but he seems pretty decided. I'm very interested to find out how he came to this decision. If you're one of those people thinking of voting for JC, let us know why. Who knows we might actually change our vote.
Final word for JC: Change your picture in your party's website. It's... well.. gayish. Hahaha! It's just my personal opinion but it's not very becoming or appropriate for someone who wants to run for president. It's more like a Facebook profile pic or a "I'm coming out" statement.
Peace!

SCHU BUY ONE TAKE ONE SALE!!!

I went trotting to the mall over the weekend to find myself a pair of black shoes. My black shoes are pretty embarrassing as my favorite strappy pair from VNC already has scratches on the back heel. My other black wedge shoes from CMG are no longer usable as the back of the weaved wedge have already unraveled and are beyond repair which is pretty sad really considering I couldn't use them anymore after only 3 months, I think. My newest pair of black platform pumps are from People are People. I'll never buy shoes there again. I'm having such a hard time using the shoes as the back part of the shoes keep on slipping off at the heel which could get pretty dangerous considering they have 4 inch heels. Geez!

So imagine how happy I was to find that Schu is on SALE! They're having a BUY-ONE-TAKE-ONE SALE on practically all their styles except for their new arrivals which is a fantastic deal in itself. I already asked the attendant to get me 3 pairs for fitting but I guess it really wasn't my lucky day. I'm a dead on half size for all the 3 styles I tried on. :( Waah! So sad!

Oh well. I think I'll try again next weekend. I'm thinking of buying a Nine West or Aldo pair of shoes since I want a pair that's durable and comfortable especially after my experience with my last few pairs of shoes. Buying cheaper shoes just isn't worth it because you'll end up spending more in the long run.
I may not have found my "perfect match" at Schu but I'll still definitely recommend that you head on over to a Schu store and try your luck.
Good luck!

The Box Movie Review SPOILER ALERT!

My boyfriend headed on over to the cinemas yesterday just to have a break and to use our Citibank receipts to get a discount on movie tickets. I wanted to watch The Box because I found the trailer pretty interesting.
**NOW HERE COMES THE SPOILER**
It's all about a couple played by James Marsden and Cameron Diaz who are given a curious wooden box with a button inside. A disfigured man had left the box for them and had given them some terms and conditions regarding the box. First, they were to not tell anyone else about the box. Second, they are only given 24 hours (specifically til 5pm of the next day) to decide between two options - (1) Do nothing and return the box for "reprogamming" or (2) Push the button and gain $1,000,000 in the process but there is also an added consequence - someone, somewhere in the world, someone they don't know will die. (Pretty nutty choice, right?)
Diaz and Marsden pretty much struggle with the choice for most of those 24 hours. Marsden, who works for NASA, was just passed up for a promotion. Diaz, on the other hand, who works as a teacher was just informed that the school has stopped offering their faculty tuition discount which would make it difficult for them to make ends meet considering they have a little boy studying in the same school where Cameron teaches. According to Cameron, as it was they were already living paycheck to paycheck and the million dollars would really help them in living the life that they dreamed of.
Just before the 24 hour deadline is up, Cameron seemingly on a whim decides to push the button thinking that it was just a box. Marsden had earlier opened up the box to find that there were no contraptions like transmitters or chips of any sort within the box except for the button.
This is where things started to give me a headache...
The disfigured man (Steward) goes back to their house on cue and gives them their one million dollars but in a sudden push of his conscience Marsden decides that he wants nothing to do with the money. In the events that followed, it became clear that they had become involved in something much bigger than they had initially thought.
The disfigured man was just a vessel or messenger, so to speak, of some "alien" power and "the box" is a means of testing the human race to see how many would pick their own needs over the life of another. Moreover, the "aliens" also have the power for mind control (which was inadvertently causing the mysterious epidemic of nose bleeding) which allowed them to watch over their test subjects wherever they may be.
In the end, because it was Cameron who pushed the button, they gave them another test. They took away the hearing and seeing senses of Diaz' and Marsden's son, Walter, then gave the couple another proposition. (Now this one is really mind numbing) They had 2 options - (1) Live with their $1,000,000, all 3 of them alive but with Walter no longer able to see and hear. Take note also that Walter's condition is not reversible and cannot be cured; or (2) Marsden should shoot his wife in the heart and at the moment that her spirit leaves her body, their son will be well again. (These people are so nutty, aren't they?)
Well... I'll leave with you with that for now so I wouldn't be revealing the entire movie. :P
So what did I think of the movie? It gave me a headache that's what I thought. The concept of having to pick between self preservation and the greater good is a good enough concept, I think, but they just brought it too far and made it too complicated. We left the movie house kinda boggled though I said at the very least it's a great conversation piece.
It's pretty interesting to think about: Would you push the button? What could you do with $1,000,000? Could your conscience handle knowing that the life of another person was lost because of you? On the one hand you could also think that there's a person that dies every minute somewhere in the world and that doesn't necessarily relate to you. Now that's something to think about... and if you did press the button, would you be willing to kill yourself so your child could get his eyesight and hearing back? Would you be willing to kill your wife/husband for the sake of your kid? Or would you rather just enjoy the $1,000,000 with your entire family intact?
Geez! It's giving me a headache just going through all the scenarios.
I'd give the movie just 2 stars out of a possible 5. It's too complicated but the story line was at the very least interesting though not necessarily entertaining.

LP Noynoy Aquino - Mar Roxas Senatorial Lineup May 2010 Elections

Have you decided who to vote for president? I'm not yet decided but more importantly I realized that I had not even started thinking about those other people I need to vote for in that ballot like senators, congressmen, mayor, counselor, etc. All the hype and focus has been on the presidentiables and the rest have been kind of forgotten.
So for everyone's info including mine, I'll be starting a series on the lineups under every presidentiable just so we know who supports who. If you're like me, I have particular presidentiables that I don't like so if a senator who I liked initially were affiliated with a presidential candidate I didn't like, well, then her name is crossed off my list of people to vote for.
Let's get the ball rolling starting with the Senatorial Lineup under the Noynoy Aquino and Mar Roxas tandem:
(I'm not going to get into specifics about each senatoriable because that would be an extremely long post but at the very least just by browsing through this one blog you'll have a view of all the people running for office.)

It's already March, just a little over a month before the elections and I'm still not decided as to who to vote for. If you've got any opinions about particular candidates whether for president, senator or mayor, let us know so we can also make informed decisions.
Watch out for the next lineups I'll be posting

Thank God It's Yellow Friday: "Rally" for Noynoy in Makati CBD

I just heard news that Noynoy supporters will be trooping to Makati tomorrow and Friday hereafter until election day (except for Good Friday). According to the Noynoy Aquino for President website (http://www.noynoy.ph), this is NOT a rally. Take note: it's NOT a rally. There might not be any need to panic but perhaps just reason to add a little allowance to your travel time estimate if you're planning on going to Makati for a Friday gimmick.
Yellow clad Noynoy supporters will be assembling at the following points at 4:45pm and will stroll along the sidewalks from the assembly points to the Ayala Triangle Garden then already disperse as soon as the four groups converge at the garden.

  • RCBC Plaza - Ayala Avenue corner Buendia
  • People Support - Ayala Avenue corner Buendia
  • McDonald's, Pasay Road corner Paseo de Roxas
  • Sta. Potenciana Gate, Urdaneta Village
If this is the case, then I don't believe that they'll be causing any monstrous traffic jams so long as they keep to the sidewalks.
In any case, it will be quite a spectacle to see groups of yellow clad people walking the sidewalks and converging at one point.
I wish them all the best. So long as they don't cause traffic (especially since they picked traffic ridden Fridays of all days), I'm all for what they're trying to do even if I'm not yet a decided Noynoy supporter (but I'm definitely NOT a Villar or Erap supporter).
At the very least it seems like it's going to be a peaceful and unobtrusive "demonstration" of support for Noynoy.
Happy Yellow Friday!

Pacquiao Versus Clottey: What a Waste!

Joshua Clottey defends himself from a righthand blow from Manny Pacquiao

Joshua Clottey defends himself from a right-hand blow from Manny Pacquiao during the Filipino's WBO welterweight title defence in Dallas. Photograph: Chris Cozzone/AFP/Getty Images

Manny Pacquiao has defended his WBO welterweight title with a comfortable points victory over Joshua Clottey in Dallas. The Filipino scored a 120-108, 119-109, 119-109 but could not find Clottey's breaking point as he maintained his proud record of never having been stopped.

The Ghanaian entered the ring with a flamboyant dance but he failed to show as much imagination once the fight started and Pacquiao was always on top.

"He's a very tough opponent. He was looking for a big shot," Pacquiao said after the fight, which took place in front of a crowd of 50,994, the biggest in the US for 17 years.

Pacquiao also revealed the he still has hopes that a potential fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr may still go ahead. "I want that fight, the world wants that fight, but it's up to him," he told Associated Press.

The pattern Saturday's fight would take was established early in the first round when, despite Clottey's peek-a-boo defence, Pacquiao still managed to advance against his taller opponent and throw punches with both hands from all angles. It was the same style that gave him spectacular wins in his past three fights and though Clottey was clearly the bigger fighter, he rarely sought to use his reach advantage.

Clottey's corner was urging him to take some risks late on but even in the final round, when he needed a knockout to win, the Ghanaian only sparingly dropped his guard.

Look at the picture and it's like you already watched the fight - all 12 rounds of it practically looked just like this - just at different parts of the ring probably.

I sat there are the coffee shop watching the "action" on the big screen and I was actually bored to death. Nothing was happening. We'd laugh a bit here and there because of some comment that some guy on Manny's coaching team would make like something about Clottey always stepping on his toes. Now that was actually pretty interesting to watch, I'd look at their toes and actually see Clottey stepping on Manny's feet.

It was also pretty funny when Clottey's coach would say something like "Alright. Let's get creative now. Let's start throwing punches!" The hilarious thing is I think he said that in the 8th or 10th round. What a hoot!

Besides that the fight was corny at best. It's like Clottey just wanted to make money off his fight with Pacquiao but never had any intentions of actually "fighting" with Pacquiao. The fights before the "main fight" actually had more oomph which is quite disappointing to say the least. Most people would actually argue that they already expected to be a lackluster fight. Perhaps that would explain why the normally packed National Sports Grill in Makati wasn't so for the Pacquiao-Clottey fight.

Oh well. Nonetheless, congratulations are in order for Manny Pacquaio! Good job for not getting so frustrated with Clottey! Oh and congratulations for bagging a reported 500 million!!! Can I get some? Even just 1 million? Hehehe!
